Psithurism: the sound of wind in the trees

Thousands of fragile tree leaves can be seen silently moving in the breeze; their tubular connecting stems enable each leaf to gently sway in multiple random directions.

As the wind picks up, the movement becomes more evident. Small, brittle branches can now be seen swaying; they theatrically shake the leaves to and fro.

Now a sound can be heard: as the leaves brush up against each other, they start to emit a collective rasping crackle. It starts as a sympathetic whisper, but then becomes a roar.
